Instructional Design

Student engagement is critical for learning to occur. Learners today are busy multi-taskers who have many demands for their time and attention. In order to engage them, they need and expect relevant and meaningful learning experiences in a safe hands on learning environment.

I have learned a great deal from my educational journey, especially with the Masters of Education - Adult Education and Training program from Colorado State University and the Teacher of Adult Program from Centennial College. As a result of these learning experiences and my extensive experience as a life long learner, I take great effort to design instruction that will enhance student engagement.

Throughout this page you will see examples of how I utilize ice breakers, effective questioning techniques and various activities to introduce concepts, increase understanding, improve energy and promote hands on experience. I have also included a sample of workshops that I have developed.

 Ice Breakers

In designing workshops and class lessons, I like to use Ice Breakers.

In addition to encouraging active discussion and participation, I find that the learners   relax and open up more and often the energy level increases.

Below you will find a sample of two ice breakers that I have utilized and find work very well. I enjoy using ice breakers at the beginning of a class or workshop to loosen learners up and introduce new concepts.

I have also used ice breakers throughout a lesson to switch to new topics or when the energy level appears to be decreasing.

Questions are a powerful means to promote critical thinking, deep refection and understanding.

To learn more about effective questioning techniques, please go to the Effective Questioning Techniques website that I contributed to through extensive research and sharing of my experiences. You will become familiar with my voice by listening to the Audio Presentation of Types of Questions.

Learning Contracts

Learning Contracts can be an effective tool to promote self-directed learning and accountability. I have provided a learning contract that I developed for my own learning as a sample of how a learning contract can be used.

Lesson Plans

I firmly believe in the power of a good plan  and as such I spend a great deal of time researching, planning, experimenting, reflecting and revising workshops and lesson plans. I utilize lesson plans as a guide since I feel it is imperative to be ready to take our cues from the learners and adjust plans so that we may seize valuable learning opportunities.

I have included sample lesson plans and workshops that  I  have developed. The first entitled SHARP was developed to  enhance memory. I have also included Networking Your Way to Work.

The majority of the learners who attend the workshops and classes that I facilitate have the aim of utilizing education to enhance their ability to thrive in today's world of work. In order to achieve this task they will need essential employability skills such as interpersonal communication skills.

Please open the file below to review a sample of my Instructional Design to enhance Interpersonal Communications in order to T.H.R.I.V.E. This comprehensive project covers the full spectrum of design from research, determining need, setting goals and objectives, designing instruction as well as formative and summative evaluation.

The Instructional Design for this project is based on the LEARN model that I have designed.
