Additional Skills and Knowledge
|
Throughout my educational journey at Colorado State, I have gained a great deal of valuable knowledge on Adult Teaching principles and effective teaching methods. Through a variety of hands on assignments and activities, I have developed a number of skills that I have added to my teacher tool kit. Throughout this page, I have highlighted some of these skills and provided samples of the activities and assignments that I have found to be valuable in enhancing my abilities as an Instructor. |
Assessment & Evaluation
If we are to be successful in our teaching, we need to know that the student has learned. As our goals and objectives are diverse, so should our assessment and evaluation methods be so that we can ensure that learning has occurred. To the right you will find a selection of assessment and evaluation methods that I have segmented into different assessment categories to assess: 1) Background Knowledge and Skills, 2) Learner Attitude, Values and Self-Awareness, 3) Learner Reaction to Instruction, and 4) Assessing Knowledge and Skills related to Interview Techniques. |

In developing and facilitating instruction, I have always found research to be a critical component. I am continually involved in research in order to determine gaps and needs and to develop instruction to meet them.
I feel it is critical to stay up to date and to bring in relevant and important research into the learning environment. It is important to not only have the skill of uncovering important research findings but also to synthesize, organize and present it in a way that further motivates and educates learners. I utilize research not only as an intregal part of the learning but also as to help the learner to realize why it is important to learn and develop their knowledge and skills. If they do not find it to be important and relevant they will not engage.
Throughout the various workshops that were highlighted on the Instructional Design page, you will note that there has been a great deal of research conducted and utilized. Below you will find secondary and original research that I conducted that eventually lead to my creating SHARP - A workshop to enhance memory.

Teaching & Learning at a Distance
Technology has changed how, when, and where we learn. For instance I live in Waterloo region of Ontario, Canada and I virtually attend Colorado State University where I share in collaborative learning activities with learners from all over the world.
Technology not only changes where we learn but also how. Throughout my Adult Education and Training journey at Colorado State, I have learned about and participated in webcasts, podcasts and utilized wikis, blogs as well as an avatar to engage in virtual learning activities.
I am now able to utilize a wide variety of online distance learning technologies to engage and communicate with learners. You may share in some of my distance learning experiences from my Teaching and Learning at a Distance course by clicking on the links below.

Podcasting
Today's adult learner wants flexibility and control over how and when they learn. As such podcasts are a great choice for learners as they can learn whenever and wherever they want.
Podcasts offer many benefits for both learners and instructors and they are easy to use.
I have created three podcasts where you may learn more about podcasts including what they are, how to develop them, the benefits of using them and best practices. I invite you to listen to them and hear a sample of my voice, by using the link below.
